O Castro British International School

Students from Year 9 and Year 10 at O Castro British International School have participated in the Globeducate Academic Olympics 2021. The competition took place over two days and pupils competed with other schools from all over the world online. The focus of this year's Academic Olympics is goal #11 of the UN - Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Students have taken part in five missions.

On Day One, the first mission involved planning an eco-friendly journey around the world visiting five sustainable cities. Students designed virtual postcards, calculated routes and costs and their carbon footprint. In Mission Two students created a Public Service Announcement video about how to recycle plastic bottles and the progress of the Plastic Bottle Greenhouse at O Castro and the work of our eco council.

Day two involved three missions. The first was a maths and science challenge with students putting their learning from O Castro’s lessons into practice. The second involved a Junkitecture challenge, where students created the Vigo city skyline from recycled materials and showed how we can become more sustainable citizens. Finally, mission five involved students using their ICT skills to create a website teaching others how to become more sustainable, following the model of O Castro and our Greenhouse Project by the Eco-Council.
