  • Tips
O Castro British International School

To learn English with children, music becomes a good ally and a perfect way to learn vocabulary and pronunciation. From O Castro British International School we are going to make a small repertoire of songs to learn English and have fun at the same time.

Yesterday | The Beatles, a perfect song to learn English

We have chosen this single by the British group The Beatles but we could also choose Hey, Jude or Yellowe Submarine. Practically all the songs by the Liverpool group have simple, slow, slow songs, with perfect diction, neutral accents, diverse vocabulary, and above all catchy, pleasant lyrics with great content and message.

We Are The Champions | Queen, the best voice for learning English

This song is perfect for learning English, and for promoting the feeling of belonging to a sports team. Its catchy melody

Circle of Life | The Lion King. Probably the music from any Walt Disney film should be in this musical repertoire. They are films designed for children with songs designed for children so the language, vocabulary, rhythm, expressions... are perfect and ideal for learning English. This song has been composed and performed by Elton John himself.

You’re Beautiful | James Blunt

The artist James Blunt has a perfect British diction and accent to learn English through music and songs. You're Beautiful is a slow song where each phrase is perfectly distinguished. It is well known and proven that any message is much more effective if it is conveyed through a story, and the same is true for language learning!

The 5 most joyful songs (scientifically proven) in the world are in English.

In 2015, neuroscientist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, Jacob Jolij decided to create a list of the most joyful songs of the last 50 years. The "happy" or "optimistic" songs have much faster tempos than the average pop music, as well as often having cheerful lyrics and using major chords.  So he concluded that the five happiest songs in history, the songs that make us feel better according to science, are in this order:

·        Don’t Stop me know de Queen

·        Dancing Queen de ABBA

·        Good Vibrations de Beach Boys

·        Uptown girl de Billy Joel

·        Eye of the tiger de Survivors

In any case, the best songs to learn English are the ones you like the most, your favourite songs, because as numerous studies have shown, learning while having fun significantly improves the memorisation of different concepts. Our aim is to enable all our students to discover what success means to them, to achieve the highest academic grades and, above all, to make this process of learning and seeking success as a basis for a fulfilling life as enriching as possible".
